3D Renderings

Table Of Contents

This page shows some of my old-school 3D renders that I had created back in high school. Most of these were modeled, more or less, using AutoCAD 2006 and were rendered in either 3D Studio Max 8 or Autodesk Viz.

The Kanians

A rendering of three Kanians standing on top of a stone pillar, showing the evil, neutral and angelic varieties.

I made this during one of my high school AutoCAD classes.

The Kanians are a race of alien creatures I made up, which have their designs inspired by both Kirby and the Chao from Sonic Adventure.

Kanian Glider

A rendering of the space ship belonging to the Kanian race.

This 3D render was submitted for the MITES competition for one of my high school AutoCAD classes. It is a render of the space ships piloted by my Kanians, as seen in my Flash cartoon, the Kanian/Azulian War.

If I remember correctly, it got a participation ribbon at least. 😅

Kanian/Azulian War

A scene from the Kanian/Azulian War, showing an army of blue Kanians wielding scimitars on the left up against an army of Azulians wielding rifles. In the background, the space ships of each respective race are dogfighting in the air.

I made this one during one of my high school AutoCAD classes. It’s a 3D rendering depicting a scene from the Kanian/Azulian War.

A couple of related renders:

A render of the Kanian army, standing in formation with their swords and shields.

A render of the Azulian army, standing in formation holding their machine gun rifles.

Bob-Omb Battlefield

A colorful Super Mario themed rendering showing a gang of shiny blue Bob-Ombs standing in formation. In the background, some Goombas, a Chain Chomp and a Mario warp pipe can be seen.

This originally started out to be just a gang of shiny Bob-Ombs. The next idea was to put them on a bright green Mario64-style terrain, and then it was only natural to create some of the other Mario baddies and throw them in there. Those include the Chain Chomp and Goombas, and also a life mushroom and a warp pipe.

Hotel Suite

A 3D rendering of the interior of a fancy presidential suite of a hotel.

I made this for my MITES project in my senior year CAD class. It got me 1st place in the regional competition and 4th in the state competition, and also a “Best of Architectural Award” on the regional. I didn’t even take architectural CAD, which makes it that much cooler that I got that award.

Virtual Battlefield

A 3D render of a polygonal terrain being rendered into existence, with the bare wireframe shown in the background.

I made this one just for fun. It’s a virtual battlefield being “materialized” into existence. You can even see some of the wire frame in the parts that hadn’t been materialized yet. It’s kinda styled like Code Lyoko.

Island Invasion

A scene of a mountainous green island in a blue ocean which is being invaded and fired upon by various black flying saucers.

During my first quarter of college in 2006, I had this really lame class called Problem Solving. During a particularly slow day, I discovered the school computers had AutoCAD and 3DS Max, and I created and rendered this drawing before the end of class that day.

The World of Lorei

An alien planet feating a spherical rocky core, connected by glass towers to six flat planes, each with a different biome.

This rendering was part of a story idea I was thinking about, involving a “nightmare realm” named Lorei which featured various biomes, each on a flat plane, connected to a core planet in the middle.

Maybe one day I’ll write more about that on here!

Sunrise on Nupiter (Not 3D)

A Photoshop rendered image depicting sunrise on a rocky red planet with a blue Jupiter looking gas giant visible in the sky.

This one was actually drawn entirely in Photoshop, but it looks like it would fit in well with these other 3D renderings. The idea was to make a planetary kind of picture from the view of some unknown planet. The planet itself was taken from a desert scene (with any plant life photoshopped out).

Very Early AutoCAD Renders

Saving the worst for last, here are some very early AutoCAD renders I made when I was first learning how to use the software.

These images were rendered inside AutoCAD directly, e.g. not exported out to Viz or 3DS Max. So they have a certain old-school charm to them, as AutoCAD 2006 was not very well equipped at making high-quality renders!

A series of faceted crystals in various shapes and colors.

The lens flare on this one was added in post using Photoshop 7.0:

A transparent cyan ball with a lens flare effect over a lightning background.

A fantastical landscape made up of cone shaped mountains and a red checkerboard pattern.

Experimenting with textures and lighting:

Three spheres resting on a copper colored surface, each one with a different material texture: wood, stone, and glass.

A crude 3D model of a black book with white pages.

A simple structure from a building in my Azulian story:

A multi-level simple building with a stone wall and red roofs.

This one was my first attempt at organically modeling an alien character in Autodesk Viz. I had learned how to sculpt terrain out of a flat plane, and tried a similar technique to create a creature, to mixed success.

A bizarre green humanoid creature with a twisted face standing on a barren alien planet.
